On Tuesday August 18th the Study Group welcomed Mr Malcolm Pratt who gave a talk on ‘Winchelsea at War’. Obviously Mr Pratt’s popularity goes before him, as a large number of the audience had travelled across from Rye to hear his talk.
Malcolm commenced by explaining that Winchelsea had played a part in many of the wars which had taken place over the centuries including the Napoleonic and the First and Second World Wars.
When there was a threat of an invasion by Napoleon it was deemed necessary to have a garrison based at Winchelsea as any landing by forces was likely to be along this stretch of the coastline.
During the second world war there was a formidable sized garrison situated in the town which required most of the residents to billet one or more soldiers.
Mr Pratt also told of happenings near to Winchelsea such as the bombs dropped by a Zeppelin at Pett.
Malcolm Pratt spoke of so many interesting little facts about Winchelsea that at the end of his talk he was given a great round of applause by his audience.
On Tuesday 15th September at 7-15pm at the Manor Barn Old Town Mr Robert Chase will give a talk he has titled ‘Napoleon’s Invasion of Russia’.
Visitors are most welcome at an admission charge of £3 to what we can promise will be an excellent and very informative talk.
