The Shiplu was among the runners-up in the prestigious Tiffin Cup – a contest to find the best South East Asian restaurant in the UK ran by the House of Commons.

Huw Merriman MP put forward the much-loved Indian on London Road after receiving the most nominations when he asked his constituents to vote for their favourite earlier this year.

Mr Azad was delighted, especially after winning ‘curry house of the year’ from the Observer.

“It was a honour to take part in the Tiffin Cup and to be awarded Highly Commended in the Tiffin Cup Grand Final,” he said.

“First of all, it was a surprise to find out that we have been nominated to participate.

“We very much thank all our supporters for getting us this far.

“We also thank the mystery diner who was generous to rank us so well in the competition during a time where we were tremendously busy everyday.”

The Tiffin Cup is a competition run at the House of Commons to applaud the quality of South Asian food in Britain and to raise money for charity.

This year the competition was in aid of World Vision and Water Aid.

Following a visit from a mystery diner, The Shiplu was awarded highly commended by the judges.

Huw joined Mr Azad and his business partner, Ahmed Ali, at the Grand Final in the House of Commons on July 12, to celebrate their success.

“I am delighted that Shiplu Tandoori has been highly commended in the Tiffin Cup,” Mr Merriman said.

“It’s a shame that they did not manage to reach the Grand Final but this is such a prestigious award and to be honoured in this way is a testament to the fantastic efforts of all the staff.”

Tiffin Cup co-chairman Keith Vaz MP said: “We are delighted that Shiplu Tandoori has been high commended in the Tiffin Cup 2016.
