A host of local charities have benefitted from donations from Bexhill’s Masons.

On Tuesday December 9 Charles McIlwrick MBE and members of The Hadrian Lodge presented six cheques to local charities and organisations.

Charles was the Master of the Lodge until mid-November when he handed over the reins to Bernard Stonestreet.

During his year the Lodge managed to raise £3500 through a variety of functions.

A cheque for £600 had already been donated to Chestnut Tree Children’s Hospice Arundel. This was £300 from The Lodge and £300 match

funding from The Sussex Lodge Charities.

The other charities which received donations on the evening were: St Michael’s Hospice, Kent Surrey and Sussex Air Ambulance, Senlac Scout Council, Bexhill Army Cadets, Rother Sea Cadets and Bexhill Air Cadets.

The donation to St Michael’s Hospice, £300 from the Lodge and £300 again from The Sussex Lodge Charities, will be used to buy two hoists.

The cheques were received by Marcia Dart the hospice’s Fundraising Team Leader.

In a letter to The Lodge she said: ““Thank you so much for the two cheques; £300 from The Hadrian Lodge and £300 donated by Sussex Lodge Charities.

“This money will be spent on two much-needed hoists for our patients.

“We would not be able to keep going without the help of people and organisations within the local community and we really appreciate all the

support we receive. Please pass on our gratitude to all your members for their kindness and support.”

The money for the charities had been raised by the Lodge at a Christmas Soiree in December 2013, a Steak and Kidney Pudding evening in January 2014, a Chinese evening February, a Race Night in March, a Garden Party/BBQ July and a Ladies Festival in November.

Charles McIlwrick said: “It is very gratifying to realise that the money donated by Masonic charities is raised through the goodwill of all the Brethren. It must also be noted that we support many non-Masonic charities as can be seen from the above. It is a myth that we only look after ourselves. Next to The National Lottery we are the biggest givers to charities. We are often first to make a donation when a disaster happens.

“I had a wonderful year and appreciate the support I had not only from the Brethren in the Lodge but from Hazel Hanley and Susan Yearwood together with many friends who attended and supported the functions.

“Remember we are not a secret society but a society with secrets.”
