Bexhill Museum walks series will include visit to Amsterdam wreck

The season gets underway on Sunday April 24 and features a wide variety of interesting walks that explore the history of the area.

They include an exploration of the deserted medieval village of Northeye, near Bexhill and a visit to the wreck of the Amsterdam at Bulverhythe in May.

The season starts this Sunday (April 24) when there is a chance to find out more about the trees in the Manor barn gardens in Bexhill Old Town. Meet at the Manor Barn at 2pm.

The Amsterdam walk is on Saturday May 7 meeting at the Coastguard Station Galley Hill 6pm. Sensible footwear is strongly advised for this walk.

There is a Family Ramble in the Highwoods on Wednesday June 1 meeting at Highwoods car park 10.30am.

The walk on Sunday June 19 will take a look at 500 years of the Royal Mail around Bexhill, meeting at Devonshire Square at 2pm.

This is followed, on Sunday July 3 by a walk which explores what Bexhill was like in 1916, meeting at the war memorial on the seafront at 2pm.

The exploration of Northeye is on Sunday July 20, meeting at the Star Inn, Normans Bay at 2pm.

The walks continue on Sunday August 17, taking in Bulverhythe and Pensham and meeting at the Bull pub, Bexhill Road, at 2pm. The walking season ends where it started, at the Manor Barn, on Sunday September 11, with a tour of the Old Town of Bexhill, meeting at 2pm.

Walks organiser David Hatherell said: “Our guided walks programme takes place in the April ~ September part of the year to take advantage, at least in theory, of good weather.

“The walks are devised and carried out by members of the museum’s Local History Study Group and gives them a chance to showcase their knowledge and research.

“Their aim is to provide a varied diet and both rural walks and urban strolls.

“The museum produces a walks leaflet which gives fuller details. Cost is £3 per adult, accompanied children £1.50. Sorry no dogs. We hope people will join us.

The walking season follows the Museum’s lecture season.

Members enjoyed a talk on the history of the British Navy by Alaric Bond on March 16.
