Bexhill students unite for life skills session

Students from Bexhill came together to continue an education programme aimed at getting children out of their comfort zones and developing life skills on Tuesday (February 23).

Year-nine students from Bexhill Academy became ‘heroes’ to year six children from Glenleigh Park, Little Common and King Offa primary schools at Azur St Leonards.

Together they developed life skills such as communication, teamwork and understanding the effect of behaviour as part of Hastings Direct’s Be the Change project.

Austin, 13, from Bexhill Academy said: “I’ve seen a new side to how people feel; I’ve chatted to other students I wouldn’t usually speak to and realised what it is to feel equal.”

Be The Change aims to raise the aspirations of year-nine students by helping them to remove barriers that may make them disengaged at school. It is sponsored by Humanutopia and LoveLocalJobs.com.

Tackling issues that asked the students to push themselves out of their comfort zones, the 13 and 14 year olds were encouraged to mix with peers they would not usually choose to interact with.

Head of pastoral care Trudy Hillman said; “Students from Bexhill Academy have once again demonstrated the difference that the Be the Change programme is having on them. It is simply fantastic watching the year nines grow and take themselves out of their comfort zones, challenge themselves and ultimately develop skills to take forward into life after school.”

Hastings Direct’s Jay Wootten said it was great to see students from four different Bexhill schools come together to mentor and help each other.

Speaking directly to the students throughout the day was Humanutopia’s co-founder Graham Moore.

“Both the pupils and teachers should be immensely proud of the way the life 
skills have been embraced,” he said.

LoveLocalJobs.com’s Rosanna Farrar said the project is bringing expertise and experience to the young people.
