Bexhill tourism industry is holding its own, says Chamber

DESPITE the Credit Crunch, Bexhill's visitor industry is holding its own, says the Chamber of Commerce and Tourism.

Chamber communications officer Sue Spice says: "May has been a bumper month for accommodation bookings made through Alastair Hazel's Discover Bexhill website. Enquiries in May have produced 85 bookings in Bexhill!

"This brilliant website is now having a big impact on our visitor numbers.

"Being email based we can ask 'Why are you visiting Bexhill?' The picture that is developing is becoming interesting.

"Here are a few of the statistics on the May bookings :-

*Attending a show at the De La Warr Pavilion (22%)

*Visiting friends or family (12%)

*Visiting Bexhill for the first time (10%)

"At the end of the summer Alastair and I will have a true picture of why people are staying in Bexhill. As you know, Alastair has funded this website himself.

"Requests for the Bexhill Guide received through the website for May have totalled 106, these are serious enquiries from people who really do intend to visit Bexhill.

"Spice Communications are funding this mailing which is, at times, worldwide. Naturally this is over and above the usual monthly distribution of the Bexhill Guide which, locally, is running at around 2,000 a month.

"With this additional help from a few dedicated people and, despite the credit crunch, our Bexhill visitor industry is holding it's own.

"We need visitors, both staying and day visitors, they spend money here, this gradually filters back to many different businesses - visitors are vital to the economy of Bexhill."
