Bexhill’s Emily Lawes is an ‘inspiration’

A para equestrian rider was ‘delighted’ to be invited to this year’s East Sussex Women of the Year luncheon.

Emily Lawes, from Bexhill, was one of the inspirational women invited to attend the event, of which The Duchess of Cornwall is honorary patron.

Held in the American Express Community Stadium, the aim of the bi-annual event is to acknowledge and celebrate the contributions, achievements and inspiration shown by women working in professional and voluntary roles in East Sussex.

It also fundraises to support organisations and charities across Sussex connected with women’s issues.

A spokesman for the event said: “This year’s focus is on raising awareness for the need to support organisations supporting family carers, of whom the greater majority are women, of people with dementia.

“They especially highlight the Alzheimer’s Society, Care for the Carers, The Carer’s Trust in Brighton and Hove and Dementia UK’s Admiral Nurses.”

Committee chairman Quenelda Avery welcomed guests, including speaker Celia Sandys who shared memories of her grandfather Sir Winston Churchill, Vice Admiral Sir Peter Woodhead and Katrina Roberts of American Express – the lead sponsor of the event.

Emily was recognised for her contribution in promoting and working with charities in Bexhill and her ongoing commitment to become the best of her class in the para equestrian field. She has qualified for the Para Home International, in Leicestershire at the end of this month and British Dressage Petplan Festival.

Next week Emily will be riding at Hickstead to try to qualify for Hartbury.

However, she may not be able to compete if more sponsors do not come forward. Harpers Properties has sponsored Emily but to complete the hat trick she needs further help.
