Birthday Quiz helps charities

Jane said: “I love organising parties and events for other people, but hate anything like that for myself. By 50, you’ve probably got most things you want or need, so I thought rather than end up with lots of gifts. I’d rather people donated to charity.

“A ploughman’s supper was provided, the venue given free of charge, and a friend was quiz master. All entry fees went to the charities.

“I chose ‘Water Aid’, as I’ve been very fortunate to have travelled quite extensively, but often to countries with poor sanitation, and polluted water.

“Also, when I was 9 and my brother 14 years old, we lost our dad in a car crash. Apart from family and friends, there was no support for us as bereaved children. School and church helped, but there was nothing ‘formal’. For this reason, my other charity was ‘Dragonflies’, based at The Fellowship of St. Nicholas, in London Road, who hold many activities and groups for children who have lost parents, siblings and other close family and friends.

“With ‘entry fees’ for the quiz, or other donations, the evening raised over £700. This meant various events could be planned by Dragonflies, and the amount given to Water Aid would be enough to build girls and boys flushing toilets with running water wash basins for a school in India.

“Thank you to everyone who attended the quiz or donated money.”
