Blood donor plea after bad weather hits stocks

BLOOD donors in the Rother district are being asked to help keep blood stocks healthy following disruption caused by wintry weather during recent weeks.

Many donor sessions had to be cancelled after being hit by snow and ice over Christmas and into the New Year, which meant there was a dip in the number of blood collections.

Thankfully, the generosity of donors over the festive period meant that there was enough blood to meet hospital demands, but NHS Blood and Transplant (NHSBT) is stressing the need for donors old and new to keep up the good work.

Spokesman John Canning said; “Blood stocks were affected over December and January and we want to get levels back to normal as quickly as possible.

“We thank all donors for their continuing generosity and appeal to those who have ever thought about becoming a donor - there’s no better time than now.”

If you would like to become a donor and are aged between 17 and 65, generally in good health and weigh more than 7st 12lbs, call 0300 123 23 23 now to register, or visit www.blood.co.uk

• The next local donor sessions will be at St Augustine’s Church Hall, Cooden Drive, on Friday, February 4 from 1.30pm to 4pm, and 5pm to 7.30pm.
