Later on the same day, emergency services were again called to Beachy Head to a car thought to have driven over the cliffs.

Police, fire and rescue teams and HM Coastguard attended, and a coastguard helicopter assisted the situation around 11am near Peace Path.

The white car was located underwater, on its roof and extensively damaged to the point it could not be immediately identified.

According to Sussex Police, it is thought the car may have gone over the cliff edge at some time on Monday afternoon or evening (February 27). No body was found in the vehicle.

A Sussex Police spokesman said: “There were no suspicious circumstances but enquiries into Mr Goodsell’s death and the discovery of a white car in the sea nearby are continuing.

“One theory being investigated is that the two incidents, which occurred on the same morning, are linked.”
