Booklet of Bexhill pensioners' 1930s food and drink memories

Care home residents in Bexhill have been sharing their memories of food and drink in the 1930s with Fairtrade campaigners to make a booklet of their stories.

Holmesdale Remembers is a collection of memories from Holmesdale House residents shared during sessions with Bexhill Fairtrade volunteer Alan Bearne.

The senior citizens told tales about all the treats and goods they enjoyed as children, many of which may no longer be around.

Alan described the booklet as ‘fascinating’ and said the arrangement between Bexhill Fairtrade and the residential home benefits everyone.

“The partnership between Holmesdale and Fairtrade is a very appropriate one,” he said.

“Holmesdale uses and promotes Fairtrade products when they can and, in return, Fairtrade are able to offer reminiscence sessions that are enjoyable, informative, creative and fun.”

Alan made notes during the meetings and wrote a draft for the residents to read, alter, add and approve so the content was a true record of what they said.

Booklets were only given to residents of the Holmesdale Road care home and their friends and families as it is a pilot project.

But Alan said is was an ‘excellent’ example of what can be achieved in future sessions between Bexhill Fairtrade and other nursing homes.

One of the residents said: “We’ve had a lot of fun sharing our memories and have found that we have got so much in common with one another.”
