Bottled water being given out in Hailsham and Polegate

Bottled water is being given out in Polegate and Hailsham tonight after a water main has left thousands of people without water.

The 30 inch diameter cast iron water main burst at the Diplocks Roundabout this morning and South East Water customers in the postcode areas of BN20, BN22, BN23, BN24 and BN27 are currently known to be experiencing problems.

There are long traffic delays in and around Hailsham.

Steve Andrews, Head of Service Management at South East Water, said, “The burst occurred on one of our 30 inch diameter trunk water mains this morning.

“Our staff and contractors are on site carrying out repairs to the damaged main.

“Our specialist technicians are also altering the flow of water around our network of underground pipes to try and restore supplies to as many people as possible. However this may take time because we need to put water back into the network in a controlled manner to prevent further bursts occurring.”

Bottled water is also being made available to customers at the car park on the junction of South Road and Station Road and in Polegate Railway station.

Additional locations will be added as soon as supplies arrive.

Steve Andrews continued, “We have organised supplies of bottled water for our customers to collect and arranged delivery to our vulnerable customers.

“Our main priority now is to get tap water supplies back on as soon as possible. We would like to apologise to our customers for any inconvenience this emergency has caused, but hope our customers understand that we are taking all necessary steps to restore supplies as soon as possible.”
