A meeting is to take place later and a formal decision made on Tuesday.

The NHS trust which runs both the Conquest Hospital and DGH in Eastbourne is likely to be given the status because it has failed to improve in the aftermath of damning reports by health watchdogs and a vote of no confidence in the trust’s leadership.

The trust has already been rated inadequate and its chief executive Darren Grayson resigned earlier this year

There have also been repeated calls for trust chairman Stuart Welling to step down.

An updated report by the Care Quality Commission, which rates hospitals across the country, is expected to be published next week.

The special measures status is implemented when there are concerns about the quality of care that hospitals are delivering.

Special measures are designed to offer the trusts the support they need to improve, as well as giving the public the ability to hold them to account.
