Bridge club plans ace anniversary

Members of Little Common Rubber Bridge Club have a special reason for welcoming 2009.

The club is one of the oldest organisations using Little Common Community Centre. This year it celebrates its golden jubilee there.

Last Thursday's weekly meeting was typical of the club, with members enjoying a quiet and friendly afternoon of bridge. The modest charge of 2 a session includes tea and biscuits.

For its jubilee year, the club is looking to build its core membership once more. In the 1950s the weekly turn-out could be as many as 15 to 20 tables. It is now much reduced.

For the club, Freddie Pearce says: "Although, nationally, the game has probably not been more popular, play has evolved from traditional 'rubber' bridge to 'duplicate' bridge which is far more competitive and which can be unattractive to beginners or those whose preference is for a less formal, friendly game of cards.

"At the Little Common Club all levels of play including beginners are welcome for as in so many aspects of life, the more experience of an activity is achieved, the better the result."
