At 10:30am, just as David Cameron was holding a cabinet meeting to determine the government’s position on whether to remain in the EU, Labour and Liberal Democrat members were campaigning to remain.

Each signed up to the Britain Stronger In Europe campaign – the main campaigning body to keep Britain in the European Union.

Three separate leaflets were handed out to passing pedestrians, one on job opportunities, one on ‘the benefit to our security’ and one on the ‘financial benefit of being in the EU’.

Organisers said several pages of signatures were filled on two petitions – one about protecting Britain’s jobs by remaining in the European Union, the other about fighting climate change alongside European partners.

Paul Courtel, a recent Labour candidate for Bexhill Central, said: “Most people I spoke with appreciated the economic benefits the European Union offered Britain.

“However, those who wished to leave were mainly concerned about migration.

“Leaving won’t change that.

“A Norway-style trading arrangement would require us to continue to accept freedom of movement with the other 27 European Union nations, whilst having no say on the European Union’s technical committees that determine the details of trading arrangements.

“We would gain nothing and lose a great deal.”

Stephen Hardy, a former Liberal Democrat Parliamentary Candidate for Bexhill and Battle, added: “I was really encouraged by the responses from many folk, especially young people, who rightly realise it is their future that this referendum is all about.

“I was also struck by people’s recognition that the environmental protection that Europe has brought to Britain is important, and to Bexhill’s beaches in particular.”
