On Saturday December 6th – Small Business Saturday – the Federation of Small Businesses (FSB) visited St Leonards on Sea and Bexhill to celebrate independent retailers and encourage people to use local shops, cafes, restaurants and pubs.
The campaign, which is organised by American Express, is keenly supported by the FSB.
Nicholae Trofin, Vice-Chair of the 1066 Country branch of the FSB commented “Small Business Saturday provides a great opportunity for towns, businesses and their customers to highlight the contribution of local independent shops, cafes, restaurants and pubs.
And they need customers to spend with them! Local businesses are often less expensive than the big chains and supermarkets and usually source from local suppliers keeping other local firms in business. £1 of your spending adds £1.76 of value to your local community if you shop with local firms.”
Nicolae’s visit around Bexhill saw him meet up with members Mike Scott at ‘News Plus’, John Di Paolo at ‘Di Paolo’s cafe’, ‘Trattoria Italiana restaurant’ and in St Leonards-on Sea, ‘Swift Cars’ and the ‘Corner Carpet Company’. Martin Searle, Development Manager of the FSB, also visited On Kings Road Martin visited Kings Butchers but couldn’t get in the shop it was so packed! In conversation with Mark Plummer of Phoenix and Plum – specialist wine merchants - Martin discovered that Mark takes tastings on site and had an event on Small Business Saturday to choose wines for Christmas.
