The campaign for new Christmas lights for Bexhill has now reached £35k after a few £1,000 donations topped up the total.

Shining Lights was launched in May to try to improve the town’s festive image after many felt 2014’s decorations left a little to be desired.

The Soul Man Sam gig at Centre Stage on Saturday, August 1, raised £1,000 and The Italian Way restaurant donated a further £1,000.

Proud Bexhillian and Christmas fan Mick Matthews started the campaign and now only needs £6,000 more to reach the £42k needed for the lights.

“I’ve been blown away by the generosity of the people of Bexhill,” he said.

“I’ve been truly humbled and am grateful for all of the donations.

“It’s more than just Christmas lights – it’s about a community coming together.”

Rother District Council provide £15k for the lights so the campaign has now reached £20k – all donations from individuals and businesses in the town.

There will be a public meeting on Monday, August 31, at 7.30pm at Bexhill Rowing Club for members of the public to find out more and share any more ideas they have for fundraising and for the decorations.
