Carol's customer care just the ticket

CAROL Benge, who works in the ticket office at Cooden Beach railway station, is among 12 Southern staff nominated for an award as part of last month's National Customer Service week.

Train passengers were asked to nominate rail workers whose approach to their comfort and convenience makes their day. Carol received 10 testimonials from people keen to see her efforts recognised.

A Southern spokesman said: “Almost all had the same things to say about her - how cheerful and friendly she is, and that she goes out of her way to ensure that journeys are as easy as possible.”

Two other Sussex Coast staff were among the 12 finalists chosen from 63 employees who were nominated - train conductors Andrew Marshall, from Brighton, and Gerry Hunt, from Eastbourne.

All will now attend an awards lunch in Croydon on November 30 at which an outright winner will be announced and receive a weekend away for two at a Marriott hotel.

Southern has more than 4,000 staff and operates 300 trains and 157 stations.
