Centenary re-enactment as authentic as possible

The document will be carried in a Argyll 10 h.p. Tonneau except for the year of manufacture, exactly the same make and model that bore the original charter in 1902.

Bexhill is believed to have been the first town in the country to convey the vital document confirming its new status as an incorporated borough by car on the last stage of its journey from London after being signed by the Sovereign.

Deputy Mayor Cllr Peter Fairhurst is sparing no effort in his researches to ensure that the May 25 re-enactment is as authentic as possible. The first sign of a breakthrough came a year ago when he mentioned his need to locate an Argyll 10 h.p. to Alan Beecher of Bexhill Museum Association.

On Monday, Alan's friend Alan Young, of Henstridge, Somerset confirmed that he will be bringing his Argyll to Bexhill for the event en route to a veteran car engagement in Switzerland.

Cllr Fairhurst hopes to amass a parade of veteran cars for the May 25 parade.

The parade will go from the station around the town centre to Town Hall Square where echoing the celebrations of a century before part of the charter will be read to the public.
