Cleaned Downs are fit for a Queen

Volunteers from Bexhill Environmental Group organised a successful '˜Clean for the Queen' event at Bexhill Downs.

More than 20 volunteers scoured the Downs on a lovely Sunday morning and gathered a vast array of rubbish amounting to over 30 full black bags.

It was all part of the national ‘Clean for the Queen’ initiative to celebrate her 90th birthday later in the year.

A fridge was one of the more unusual items found but the number of bottles and cans indicated there is still a lot to do to educate some people to use waste bins, or just take their rubbish home.

Bexhill Environmental Group has become well known for organising the regular Bexhill beach cleans during the winter months and is now looking at other projects to help brighten up the town.

The group has decided to repeat the effort on the Downs later in the year.

The group is sponsored by B&Q, Cooden Beach Hotel and the Bexhill Co-Op who have helped provide gloves and litter pickers as well as the all important tea and biscuits.

Campaign director Adrian Evans said the aim of Clean for the Queen was to attract one million people across the country to clean up in their communities.

He said: “Our ambition was to create a community inspired, grass-roots mass action event – one that will become a recurring annual initiative.”
