Consultant surgeon Mr Hugh Apthorp and Conquest orthopaedic short-stay programme were highly commended at a prestigious national award ceremony in the Grosvenor House Hotel in London. Conquest orthopaedic short-stay programme had been nominated for the Health Services Journal award for clinical services redesign.

Mr Apthorp said, "It is a huge honour to be highly commended for this award for our work on short-stay hip replacement surgery. Since we started the short-stay procedure in November, 2004, we have significantly reduced the length of time patients stay in hospital. Normally patients having hip replacements would stay in hospital for seven days, now it can often be 24 hours. I am delighted that the hard work of the team has been recognised by the Health Services Journal."

At the award ceremony, the citation said of the Conquest orthopaedic short-stay programme, "This was a project designed to safely reduce length of stay for total hip

replacement surgery led to new approaches not only in surgical technique but also in the care pathway. The success of the project and the reduction in bed occupancy has seen the same model used for all joint replacement procedures and a reorganisation of pre-assessment clinics and theatre lists. Results of the programme are better than any published in the UK. The project has also attracted significant new revenue for the trust."
