Replacing locks and a door which were broken in the burglary last night (April 8) near the Martello Tower will cost the charity £180.

Vice-chairman Tom Gwilliam, 27, said: “That’s money I could be spending on training people or getting life-saving equipment for the summer.

“It’s just disappointing to have to now spend funds that our guys and girls spent last summer raising or applying for grants for on property.”

Tom, who lives in Seaford and has volunteered with the charity since he was 11, said a ‘fair amount of cash’ was stolen from a cafe which shares the hut with the lifeguards.

Nothing was stolen from the charity but the burglar rifled through first aid equipment after forcing its front door and locks.

The intruder failed to get into the cafe via a separating interior wall in the hut but later broke in via its shutters at the back.

The break-in happened overnight after the cafe closed at about 6pm.

Lifeguards and police were alerted after a dog walker came across it early this morning.

Witnesses can call police on 101 quoting serial 47160045397

Tom said running the charity was expensive due to fuel costs and the price of its equipment and training courses.
