County news - Volunteers needed to keep National Trust land in shipshape

A small group of hardworking volunteers are appealing to people from all over Sussex to help them maintain National Trust land on the South Downs.

The South Downs National Trust Volunteers (SDNTV). supports the National Trust by helping to keep the organisation’s open spaces and visitor areas in great shape.

But as well as performing a very useful job for the community and the countryside, it’s also a good way to make new friends and learn new skills.

A spokespeson for the group said: “We support the National Trust in maintaining their open spaces maximising visitor areas whilst making friends and learning new skills.

“South Downs National Trust Volunteers (SDNTV) was founded in 1988, by several volunteers who were carrying out voluntary work for other conservation groups after the great storm. ”Since then, the group has gone from strength to strength, carrying out over 1,500 hours of conservation work per year across Sussex at a variety of countryside locations.

“Tasks include; heathland and woodland clearance, footpath maintenance, fencing and dry stone walling. In the summer months stewarding is provided at open air events.

“The group has an active social programme including walks (day and evening), meals out, Bowling, pub nights.

“The National Trust relies upon contributions and donations from members and the work of volunteers. There are over 60,000 volunteers contributing 3.1 million hours of their time, an enormous cost saving if compared with paid roles.”
