Their car was traced to the A267 at Frant, heading north into Kent, and police units from Sussex and neighbouring forces, including a police helicopter and armed response vehicles, were deployed.

Sussex Police say the car was seen to join the A21 near Southborough and then the M25 near Sevenoaks before passing through the Dartford Tunnel into Essex.

The BMW was stopped near junction 30 shortly before 11am and the two men were arrested on suspicion of various offences, including drink-driving, taking a vehicle without consent and making threats to kill.

The pair are being held in police custody at Hastings pending further enquiries.

The victim was unharmed in the incident.
