Curtains up on flower festival

Christchurch is preparing for the explosion of colour and creativity that is its annual Festival of Flowers this weekend.

Doors open tomorrow on what will be the 23rd annual event and this one, entitled Curtain Up and reflecting a theatrical theme, will be officially launched at 11am by new Town Mayor Cllr Stuart Wood.

Floral displays will include a rich and diverse range of work, from Carmen the opera to Old Time Music Hall, and from the Nutcracker ballet to Cirque Du Soleil, with a bit of Shakespeare thrown in.

The festival is as ever the result of much work by members of the Ladies Supper Club and admission is free but donations are welcomed.

It is hoped to raise funds this year for the I CAN charity which supports children and young people who struggle to communicate, the Meningitis Trust, and church projects.

It’s open tomorrow from 10-4.30pm, and the same hours on Monday. On Sunday it will open from 2-4.30pm and cream teas will be available. At 6pm on Sunday there will also be a special service of celebration by the Rev Stephen Maunder.

Other attractions will be on hand in Centenary House Church and Community Centre, and for further details go to www.christchurchmethodist.org.uk.
