Dangerous Dog Campaign

A sheep owner who lost beloved pets when her flock was attacked by dogs is campaigning for a change in the law.

Gillian Stone is calling for immediate impounding of dangerous dogs following the deaths of four sheep kept on land near Potmans Lane.

She was distraught to discover the ewes and lambs which had been killed, and found a fifth sheep, Buffy, badly mauled with savage injuries to the neck and back leg.

Sussex Police are still investigating the three separate attacks, which started at the end of September, and collecting witness statements.

Gillian, of Cooden Drive, was concerned to discover that although dogs were caught on site, the police were not able to take instant action to prevent further attacks happening, and handed them back to their owner.

She said: "If a dog attacks livestock, or other dogs, the police have no power to seize that dog until after a successful prosecution.

"Meanwhile the dogs can be out there running amok. Even if they attack a human and don't do a lot of damage, the police have no powers to remove them. It seems to be a complete farce. Nothing can be done."
