Day in court for Gullivers supporters

Campaigners will today attend a hearing in High Court on the future of Gullivers bowls club.

Members of Gullivers Action Group and Cantelupe Community Association are optimistic about the decision on what one Judge has described “an issue of general importance.”

This stems from plans from Churchill Retirement Living to build on the site a new complex including 41 sheltered apartments and car parking.

Resident Anne Marie Loader opposed the scheme and now the court is being asked to consider the environmental impact of development and removal of asbestos following the proposed demolition in Knole Road.

Application for mixed use residential/leisure development on the site was refused by Rother District Council but granted on appeal.

However, the appeal decision itself was later quashed on the environmental grounds to be fully considered in court today.

Campaigner Dru Tramaseur, of Brassey Road, commented: “A positive outcome at the High Court should, however, please all concerned.

“There is now even more reason to stop unwanted development on the site. If Rother District Council has to carry out the rumoured plans to reduce the subsidies it pays to other bowling clubs around Bexhill, Gullivers Bowls Club should benefit. “Membership should increase substantially – or it could rent out its second, currently unused, outdoor green to other clubs – or amalgamate. Either way the club will benefit financially and be able to improve its general facilities.”
