Details on 300+ homes for Bexhill to be revealed

More details on proposals to build more than 300 new homes in Bexhill will be discussed by Rother District Council (RDC) next week.

The authority granted outline planning permission two years ago for developers to build the houses on land north of Barnhorn Road.

Two applications were submitted, one to build 275 dwellings and a separate one to provide a further 67.

A report by officers, which will be presented to RDC’s planning committee on Thursday (December 8), said developers were seeking approval for layout and scale, landscape and appearance of the proposed houses. The report said: “The principle of housing development has already been accepted by the granting of outline planning permission in 2014 and this application is concerned only with the reserved matter details of scale, layout, appearance and landscaping, including the protection of the trees on site and provision of play areas.”

The action group, SayNo2Barnhorn Green, handed a petition to RDC after the two application were given outline planning permission.

Objectors said there would be a further increase in traffic and congestion along Barnhorn Road and surrounding areas, a harmful increase in traffic pollution and access issues for emergency, delivery, refuse vehicles and buses.

They also said the new homes represented an overdevelopment and an unacceptable high level of housing density not in keeping with the locality which would have a harmful impact on the character of Little Common and the surrounding area.

As regards the second application, developers have asked RDC for permission to substitute the primary school permitted by the outline planning permission for 67 extra houses instead.

RDC received almost 100 letters of objection from residents to the proposals. But officers are recommending approval, saying the county council confirmed it had no requirement for a primary school in west Bexhill.
