Discount food store coming to Sidley

A NATIONAL supermarket chain is planning to build a new shop in the heart of Sidley.

Lidl has submitted plans to tear down the Ex-Catalogue Warehouse in Ninfield Road and create a new store from scratch.

The Scandinavian firm is famed for its no-frills service and cut-price food.

Lidl is understood to be still in talks to buy the current property but has already applied for planning permission.

The new store would be similar in size to the current building, originally a biscuit-packing factory, with car parking for 71 vehicles.

It would be open up to 8pm in the week, 6pm on Saturday and 5pm on Sunday.

No timescale has yet been put on the scheme.

Lidl says the store would help bring new prosperity to the centre of Sidley. As well as creating jobs, Lidl says it would attract customers from all over town who would then use other shops and services in the village.

It will need to satisfy planners that any new store would have no significant impact on traffic flow on the busy main road.

Lidl currently has some 330 stores nationwide.
