According to trade magazine The Grocer, shopping at the German discount retailer will save £10 on a typical basket of goods.

The shop of 33 items came in at a little over £40 - 27 per cent cheaper than any of the ‘big four’ of Tesco, Asda, Sainsbury’s and Morrisons.

Aldi’s rivals claim that their own brands are of superior quality to the discount versions offered by the bargain brand. However, The Grocer rated their own-brand products highly with 19 of the 68 Own Label awards going to Aldi.

Budget rival Lidl was not included on the pricing survey, but received 12 Own Brands awards, the same number as Tesco.

Aldi: £40.28

Asda: £50.96

Morrisons: £52.06

Tesco: £53.90

Sainsbury’s: £57.95

Waitrose: £61.64
