Dogs dumped by owner

Two starving rottweilers were abandoned at Glyne Gap this weekend.

The dogs were rescued on Saturday morning by residents of Lewis Avenue having been dumped by the owner who drove away in a blue people carrier.

The animals were so hungry they devoured dry toast before being taken away by Rother District Council's dog warden.

This week the concerned resident who rescued them contacted the Observer and said: "My brother saw the people carrier come down the lane really fast. Then he saw this man in the field with the two dogs '“ he kicked them both in their stomachs.

"Then he saw the car race off.

"We thought he put the dogs back in the car but an hour later a neighbour said there were two dogs looking over the fence. We went out and there were the rottweilers running around the lane at the back '“ one was a young female, one a male dog, and both very friendly, but we were a bit anxious with them being rottweilers what they would be like."

The local vet surgery was contacted and a request for help put through to the RSPCA, but she claims she was told the latter did not provide a rescue service at the weekend and therefore the dog warden had been alerted.

"The RSPCA said they didn't know when they could get someone out there...but it doesn't matter to me if it is the weekend if you have two dogs running up and down the lane. We didn't know what their temperaments were like...and if they got on the main road they could have caused a major accident."

Luckily the dogs were easy to control and one was put on an old lead while the other had a piece of rope.

"In the beginning we didn't know if they were friendly or not. We took our chances and went out to them '“ we had to, because so many people use the lane, and children go down there, people use it to cut across the field. We didn't know what the dogs might do.

"We coped fine with the dogs because they were quite friendly but we couldn't believe how thin they were '“ you could see their ribs. They obviously hadn't been fed. We gave them dry toast because we didn't have dog food and they were so hungry.

"How people can be so callous and dump dogs like this I just don't know, to not feed them so their ribs are showing. They were lovely dogs with very good temperaments, so loyal they were just waiting for their owner to come back to them.

"But what we want now is for people to be aware that if anything happens at the weekend they have to call the Rother dog warden, not the RSPCA. And we want people to be aware this is now happening...I know vets bills have become horrendous lately but to take two dogs, starve them like that and then dump them is unbelievable. It is horrendous."
