Edwardian lights for Sackville Road

EDWARDIAN-style lamp posts will replace out-of-keeping modern lighting in a prime town centre conservation area street.

Rother District Council has secured European Union funding for the scheme as part of its plans to improve Bexhill and safeguard the town centre's Edwardian architectural heritage.

The lighting scheme was suggested by landscape architect Tim Gale in his original designs and formed an important part of the overall proposal for the seafront improvements.

The scheme is designed to enhance the street lighting in Sackville Road and also Park Avenue, between Egerton Road and West Parade.

Rother said in a statement this week: "Preliminary work has started and the installation of columns in Sackville Road will start next week.

"To ensure the safety of the public and operatives, temporary parking restrictions will be put in place. These will be placed for the minimum period to allow completion of the installation work by Colas Roads on behalf of East Sussex County Council.

"Final connections will be carried out by EDF Energy over the following weeks.
