Bexhill Leisure Centre and swimming pool operators Freedom Leisure has received recognition for its environmental policies.

After independent checks of its eco-credentials, the Bexhill centre has been accredited with the ISO 14001 ‘Environmental Management System’ standard which demonstrates Freedom Leisure’s commitment to improving environmental performance.

Freedom Leisure voluntarily chose to undergo the inspection as part of its commitment to reducing energy usage. All 38 of its centres across Sussex, Kent, Surrey and Worcestershire passed with flying colours.

“We are delighted that our eco work has been recognised with this formal certification,” says Freedom Leisure Environmental Manager Simon Davey.

“The Bexhill Leisure Centre, Bexhill Leisure Pool and Rye Sports Centre like all the centres we manage have their own environmental impact plans which works towards reducing consumption of gas, electricity and water.

“This might include a range of measures such as sensor lighting, push taps, sustainable procurement and waste management.

“This certification demonstrates Freedom Leisure’s environmental credentials whilst challenging the organisation to push to the forefront of environmental innovation.

As part of their commitment to environmental policies all staff are encouraged to contribute their own thoughts and ideas on how they can be greener, through a suggestion scheme run by Freedom Leisure.

Additionally, each site has eco champion who works to help the centre save energy reminding both staff and members to turn off lights and to recycle.

Green travel plans have also been put in place informing customers how to get to their local centre via public transport. Staff are encouraged to take public transport, cycle or even walk to work if possible.
