British people reveal what makes them happiest in their gardens in RSPB survey
Following the Met Office's recent announcement that this summer was the joint hottest on record, people across the country have revealed what makes them happiest in their gardens.
A survey of 2,000 people was carried out by housebuilder David Wilson Homes, which is building its Rosewood Park development in Bexhill, in partnership with the RSPB.
Natalie Perry, sales and marketing director for the company, said: “After such a splendid summer spent in our gardens we wanted to find out what people think about them if they could have anything.”
Respondents were asked numerous questions, including whether they would prefer natural or artificial grass in their garden.
The clear winner was natural grass, with 63 per cent of people favouring this, and 35 per cent of those surveyed agreeing that artificial grass is ‘naff’.
When asked what would make them happiest to have in their garden, a vegetable patch came out on top, with 31 per cent of the vote – even beating answers including a swimming pool which got 29 per cent of the vote and a bar, with ten per cent.
Natalie said: “Going back to nature was the clear winner – both in choosing natural grass over artificial, and by saying that a vegetable patch would make us the happiest in our gardens – even better than having a swimming pool.”
David Wilson Homes has installed bee houses throughout a number of its developments, including at Rosewood Park, to attract solitary bees, as part of its corporate partnership with the RSPB to give nature a home.
Together with the RSPB, David Wilson Homes has just launched a new consumer guide to making gardens wildlife friendly. The guide, called Bringing Your Garden to Life is available for free download at www.dwh.co.uk.
Currently on offer at Rosewood Park is a collection of one-, two-, three- and four-bedroom homes, with prices starting from £172,995 for a one-bedroom apartment.
