Exotic delights lined up for beerlovers at De La Warr ale festival

Beer lovers will be able to sample brews from as far away as New Zealand when Bexhill Rotary Club holds its Ale and Arty Festival at the De La Warr Pavilion this weekend.

On offer are rare craft beers from across the UK including Scotland, Wales and the Orkney Islands, as well as a fine selection from closer to home in Sussex.

The two day event opens on the evening of Friday September 4 and continues with two sessions on Saturday 5.

The Festival will raise funds for a number of charities and good causes including St Michael’s Hospice, Bexhill Caring Community, Homecall and The 1066 Special Football Club.

Beer highlights include the Three Boys Brewery Oyster Stout, from New Zealand, rich and complex and with a 6.2 percent gravity strength, as well as Provision, a rare seasonal beer from Burning Sky at Firle which is a tart, crisp, slightly sour and incredibly refreshing saison.

Other rare beers include Dark Munro from Orkney, a 4 percent dry hopped stout with light chocolate nose and dry, sweet roast chocolate flavour, and Celt - House Lager a crisp 5 percent pilsner from Caerphilly hopped with Amarillo for a subtle fruit notes.

Local beers include Down Under IPA, from the Hastings Beer Co, described as “a riot of Aussie and Kiwi hops”.

Bexhill based Franklins are providing Mama Knows Best, a refreshing best bitter with a complex malt bill and showcasing Mosaic hops rich in mango, lemon and earthy pine.

Heavy weight of the Festival is Anarchy - Knuckle Dragger, an 8.3% Imperial Indian Pal Ale, which is described as ‘a strong flavoursome IPA with herbal and caramel notes’.

The Festival also has a fine line-up of live music.

Colin Stutely, from Bexhill Rotary, said: “Due to overwhelming public demand Bexhill Rotary Club have booked Howlin Blues’ to open the first session of this year’s festival.

“Bexhill based band Loose Ends are appearing at Saturday Lunchtime and we hope this session, which is from 11 am to 3 pm, will attract families as well as the serious CAMRA beer tasters who like to travel by train.

“On the Saturday evening we have music from The Chandeliers and The Deep Sea Drivers, as well as over 35 Beers and Ciders to stimulate the taste buds.”
