Ninfield Bonfire Society led the torchlit procession through the village, backed up by societies from across the county, including Battle, Robertsbridge, Staplecross, Hastings and Northiam.

The controversial badger cull inspired this year’s effigy, which was blown to smithereens in front of a cheering crowd, with a remarkable firework display bringing the evening to a close.

The first local bonfire event of 2013 has set the bar high for other societies, with many spectators praising it as the best Ninfield bonfire to date.

Money collected on the night will be donated to the Cystic Fibrosis Trust.

The next fundraising event for Ninfield Bonfire Society will be the Christmas Fair on December 7.
