Flowers were laid at the Little Common War Memorial on Sunday morning (February 14) as friends marked the fifth anniversary of the death of a soldier from Bexhill.
Private Robert Wood died in a fire which broke out at Camp Bastion, near Lashkar Gar in Helmand province, Afghanistan, on Valentine’s Day in 2011.
Private Wood grew up in Bexhill and attended All Saints’ primary school, then King Offa, followed by Bexhill High.
After school, he worked locally in McDonalds and Sainsbury’s and at age 19 signed up for the Army.
He served for nearly 10 years and had two tours of duty in Iraq, then the final one to Afghanistan.
The 28-year-old had become a father just three months before his tragic death.
One heartfelt tribute nestled among the flowers read: “Five years have passed but we can still hear your voice and laugh like it was yesterday which gives us the strength to carry on with the memories we have in our hearts and thoughts for such a special young man taken so soon.”
