Gardeners Dig In

THE race is on for Bexhill gardeners to knuckle down and ready their town for this summer's visit by the South East In Bloom judges.

Bexhill entrants were among dozens who braved the winter weather to attend the South and South East in Bloom seminar at Bewl Water reservoir.

The seminar was for small entries to the competition that aims to promote, support and encourage gardening and horticulture across the south and south-east.

New awards addressing changing conditions in the South include recognition for neighbourhoods and school grounds in bloom and a water wise award.

Peter Holman, chairman of South and South East in Bloom, said: "Gardening is evolving and the effects of climate change are becoming more and more apparent.

"Planting times and techniques are varying with the onset of longer, drier summers and shorter, wetter winters. Many gardeners are planting drought-resistant plants to save both time and water."

Geoff Loader, communications manager for Southern Water, said: "It's been a dry winter, so we want to make sure that people use water wisely, and don't waste it. There are many ways to save water in the garden including the use of water butts to collect rain water, planting drought-resistant plants, using spray guns instead of hoses and mulches to conserve moisture."
