Greg defends local shops

BATTLE MP Greg Barker has spoken out against the loss of local shops and in defence of community spirit during a recent House of Commons debate.

Mr Barker, who spoke during the third reading of the Sustainable Communities Bill, cited Little Common as an example of where residents risk being ignored if planning decisions are taken out of the hands of the local council and made by inspectors on appeal. He went on to stress the importance of residents feeling a sense of real ownership of the development of their community.

Mr Barker says he hopes the Bill would help turn the tide back towards local decision making.

Speaking after the reading, Mr Barker said: "I am glad the Sustainable Communities Bill for which I have campaigned hard has now completed all the stages in the House of Commons.

"This Bill will give local communities a far greater say on how their taxpayers money is spent. In particular, I hope that giving more power to local people will help tackle 'ghost town Britain' - the ongoing loss of local shops, services and facilities. I hope the House of Lords won't delay approving it."
