Hastings to Bexhill seafront cycle path number one

Sustrans placed the seafront route as the top ‘coastal ride for kids’ on their website which gives advice to parents on where to take their children cycling.

The charity described the route as ‘fantastic’ and ‘ideal’ for children to learn how to ride a bike.

“This fantastic traffic-free coastal cycle route is ideal for beginner cyclists that want to ride away from motorised traffic,” it reads.

“The route runs alongside a railway line, linking two existing paths to complete a five kilometre traffic-free route that offers fantastic seaside views along the way.”

Rother District Council cabinet member for environment, transport and public realm Ian Hollidge was delighted with the route’s recognition.

“It’s really worth shouting about because the key is that it is traffic-free,” he said.

“When people first start to ride a bike they wobble and become scared of going on the road because of the traffic.

“So you need somewhere traffic-free to learn and the route has plenty of space all around to allow people to fall over and bump safely.”

Cllr Hollidge is also a spokesman for cycling group Bexhill Wheelers and hopes the route’s popularity will help gain funding for more cycle paths.

He said he wanted to have a designated route from Cooden to Pevensey Bay along Herbrand Walk to fully connect Eastbourne, Bexhill and Hastings by bike.

Furthermore the councillor hopes to have a 1066 Route to connect the rest of Rother to the successful seafront path. But he said all of these plans would need government or private funding so the popularity of the Hastings to Bexhill route will help to sell improvements.
