NICE, the National Institute of Health and Care Excellence, held a question and answer session before a public board meeting, giving residents a chance to quiz them on local issues at the education centre.

Chairman David Halsham said it was ‘really good’ to be holding the event in Hastings as they try to visit as many places around the country as possible.

“It’s always interesting whenever we tour the country we get a different sense of questions from different places. I can never predict what’s going to come up,” he said.

“I spent most of my life as a GP so I’m quite used to answering questions on anything and everything.

“But I thought it was a really interesting mixture, we knew we were going to get a lot of questions around lower back pain and acupuncture but we had questions also on carers, medicines, cancer drugs and so on, so fantastically varied.”

Deputy chief executive and director of health and social care Gillian Leng gave an overview of NICE’s work before she and Dr Halsham took questions from the audience.

Dr Halsham said the area ‘has challenges’ – referring to the East Sussex Healthcare NHS Trust being in special measures – but that it was good to meet people and discuss the problems.
