High School tributes at Ground Zero

AMONG the thousands of messages that have been posted in New York to rescue workers at the World Trade Centre is a poster from Bexhill High School pupils.

Addressed to the people of New York and bearing a Union Flag, the poster is on display at Union Square subway station just a short distance from Ground Zero.

It is surrounded by letters, pictures, photographs and flags that have been sent from around the world. Every day the displays are read by thousands of commuters using the subway. Similar displays have been arranged at other subway stations. Many carry messages from families and loved ones of the victims.

High School assistant head Dave Cowley said: "The reaction of the youngsters in the school after September 11 was immense and reflected the feelings of youngsters across the whole nation.

"This is the first we have heard of how prominently our letter and our feelings are displayed in New York."

A special memorial service was held at Ground Zero on Monday to mark the six months' anniversary of the disaster.
