Hole appears in London Road

HIGHWAYS engineers closed London Road, Bexhill after the carriageway collapsed south of the Woodsgate Park junction.

Cracks appeared in the Road on Monday.

By lunch-time on Tuesday a hole 18 feet across had opened.

In a press statement, East Sussex County Council Highways Department said: "The A269 London Road, Bexhill-on-Sea is subject to a emergency road closure from its junction with St George's Road in a southerly direction for a distance of 125 metres to outside property number 178.

"This is due to the carriageway collapsing which East Sussex Highways are currently investigating.

"Until the reason for the collapse is determined it is not possible to say when the road will be reopened but we will send an update when we have further information."

The department put up signs advising drivers to divert via Wrestwood Road, Hastings Road, De La Warr Road and King Offa Way.
