Household recycling depot could move nearer to homes

THE county council has confirmed that it is looking at a proposal to shift the existing household waste recycling facility, currently near the Pebsham landfill site.

A new site proposed by waste contractor Veolia would put the household site nearer to properties in Bexhill Road, St Leonards.

Details of the scheme were confirmed by the county council as waste authority in response to Observer inquiries.

The proposal comes as more and more Rother householders are being forced to take waste to the household site because they are unable to cram it into the 180 -litre wheelie bins issued under the Rother kerbside recycling scheme launched in June.

A county spokesman said: "There is a proposal for a new household waste recycling site in Pebsham at the southern side of the existing waste transfer station on the west side of Freshfield Road.

"This would replace the existing facility on the east side of the road.

"A screening report has been submitted by Veolia to the county council to establish whether an environmental impact assessment would be required.

"Having considered the report, the council considers that one would be required to accompany any future planning application."
