Jack the Lad's charity walk

Radio presenter Jack the Lad was met by cheers from the crowd as he crossed the line to complete his 80-mile winter charity walk from Rye to Littlehampton.

The weary Southern FM Breakfast Show joker took on the gruelling trek to raise money For Southern FM's Help A Local Child, benefitting needy children in Sussex.

His efforts have so far made more than 12,000 in donations and pledges. The hike took Jack from Rye to Guestling, then through Hastings, Bexhill, the Pevensey area, Eastbourne (Beachy Head), Seaford, Saltdean, Portslade, Worthing, East Preston, then finally, Littlehampton

He started on December 11 and 11 days later triumphantly reached his destination to applause from a group of loyal supporters, including his mum and fiancee. Jack the Lad, real name Jack Haynes, walked each day between 6am and 10am to coincide with Danny and Nicky's Breakfast Show - facing freezing conditions.

He said: "It was my idea to do the walk. I wanted to do something because Christmas was coming. "Most of us take it for granted that we'll be sitting up at the table for our Christmas dinner, some kids won't have that. They won't even have presents to unwrap.

"I wanted to give them something to wake up to and to help underprivileged kids with their day-to-day life. "I'm overjoyed with the amount we've raised - people have been so generous in the run-up to Christmas." The Breakfast Show's man on the street admitted the walk had been tiring and that some mornings it had been difficult to get out of bed.

Jack said: "The first week was not too bad, but the last three days especially got really cold. On Thursday it was minus three when I started! "It was nice to give a little bit back but it'll also be nice to have a lie-in!"
