Leaves still growing in Autumn!

IT may be autumn, but there's one tree in Bexhill that's putting on leaves almost as fast as the others are losing them.

The Tree of Life, a community art project in the crypt of St Barnabas church, in Sea Road, proved a big hit with local people and visitors alike when it got underway on Saturday.

The project is the brainchild of Bexhill Artists Workspace (BAW) and features a real tree branch set in a pot in the crypt of the church. Visitors were invited to take a leaf-shaped piece of paper and draw an image of something they saw around them.

That drawing was then fixed to the branch so that the tree blossomed with images and 'came to life'. The Tree of Life project is part of Open Studios in which 13 Bexhill artists have come together in the crypt of St Barnabas to give people a chance to see artists from their community at work. Both initiatives come under the umbrella of Coastal Currents 2004, a massive display by artists of the Sussex coast from Rye to Bexhill. The BAW's Eleanor Harding said: "It's exceeded expectations. There was a tremendous response to the Tree of Life. It was well publicised and people came from some way away to see it. If this coming weekend is as good as last weekend, it will have been a brilliant success."

Any budding artists who would like to take part in the Tree of Life project can turn up at the church from 11am on Saturday or midday on Sunday. All welcome.
