Legion aims to attract new blood this weekend

LITTLE Common Royal British Legion is holding open events over the Bank Holiday weekend to promote the work of the group and attract new members.

Club secretary Ann Smith said: "The message that we are trying to get across to people is that they don't have to have been in the armed forces to join. The Royal British Legion supports our armed forces regardless of whether they belong or not.

"The group helps not only those who have served in the Second World War but those who have served in conflicts since, including the current conflict in Afghanistan."

The open weekend starts tonight (Friday) at Meads Avenue from 8pm with 1960s and 1970s music from Centre Page.

Tomorrow (Saturday), Little Common RBL will host an afternoon fair from 2pm with stalls, competitions and games. In the evening, rockabilly band The Hustlers will entertain. On Sunday, the group's chef will be offering a two-course carvery for 5.95 and on Monday night there will be a free race night.

Ann said: If you join now, you will be in time to enjoy many future events such as the Rod Stewart tribute next weekend and an Abba tribute in October, as well as great Poppy Appeal entertainment scheduled just before Remembrance Sunday."
