Library to host Book Ahead day on Friday

BEXHILL Library will be the venue next Friday for one of a series of events across East Sussex to help to spread the joy of reading to young children and their parents and carers.

Book Ahead is a national project funded by the Department for Children, Schools and Families and the Museums, Libraries and Archives Council.

The launch events have been organised by East Sussex County Council's Library Service working with East Sussex Childminding Networks.

The project will see book collections loaned out to childminders, nurseries and playgroups as the council and its partners use the National Year of Reading 2008 to help promote reading to all age groups and communities.

To launch the Book Ahead project, childminders have been invited to the special sessions in libraries across East Sussex.

The sessions will allow childminders and the children they care for to take part in rhymetimes, enjoy stories and entertainment and borrow their first bag of books. They will also be given more information about how the project will work and tips on sharing books with young children.

Councillor Bob Tidy, lead county cabinet member for community services, said: "The National Year of Reading provides us with the perfect platform to highlight the excellent initiatives being carried out by our library service to promote reading. These sessions for childminders are just one part of the work we are doing across East Sussex to help foster a love of reading."

Friday's session at the library in Western Road will be from 10.30am until 11.30am.
