Lions say thanks to Bexhill

THE generosity of town residents has allowed Bexhill-on-Sea Lions Club to donate £10,000 to good causes over the last year.

The list runs to dozens of needy groups.

Club members have been giving Christmas thanks to all those who have helped over the past 12 months.

Some of the most significant groups helped by the Lions support the youth of Bexhill, such as the 1066 Swimmers, the Bexhill Giants Basketball Team, Invicta Duke of Edinburgh Award Group, Bexhill Youth and Community Centre, St. Michael's Church Youth Club, Glenco Football Club, Little Common Football Club, and Bexhill Rowing Club.

Other local organisations benefiting from support included Cruse Bereavement Care, Chantry School, Bexhill Caring Community, Homecall, Relate, Bexhill Citizens Advice Bureau, Rother Diabetes Society, Sussex Air Ambulance, and also a large number of private individuals - often disabled or elderly - desperately in need of financial help. National and International beneficiaries included WaterAid, Chernobyl Children's Lifeline, Lions International Blood Research Programme, Leo House Hospice, SightSavers who benefited from cash donations and around 6000 pairs of old spectacles given for refurbishment by the people of Bexhill, and The Teddy Bear Clinic for abused children in South Africa now being supplied with bears knitted in the town.

Further support for the local community '“ requiring little money but much effort and time from the Bexhill Lions - included activities such as "It's a Knock Out" for the disabled, the school based "Peace Poster" competition, a mystery tour and cream tea outing for senior citizens, and adding to the "fun of the fair" with their Victorian swingboats and other stalls at a variety of local school and community fetes throughout the year.

A spokesman for the Lions said: "Whilst the Bexhill Lions, and their partners, are pleased to give their time and effort to support these causes, it is to the residents of Bexhill to whom the real thanks must go; it is their financial donations that make all the difference, whether giving during street and house-to-house collections at Christmas time, supporting the Easter Egg draws in various pubs and restaurants, attending fund raisers such as cheese and wine evenings, subscribing to the '100 Club', parents giving to their children such as the WaterAid fundraising by St Peters and St Pauls School, or supporting the Lions' swingboats, games and stalls at local fetes and fairs during the summer months.

"So, thank you Bexhill! And keep the donations coming '“ they are always needed. Bexhill Lions and Father Christmas will be visiting many local homes during the early evening between now and Christmas, so please be generous.
