Based in Sandbach Cheshire, the award winning band is one of the country’s leading youth brass band organisations and are currently touring the South Coast playing performances and raising money for local Lions Clubs in the area.

Bexhill Lion Richard Winrow, Chair of the Community Services team, says the National Youth Brass Band consists of three bands that are run entirely by volunteers.

“The Youth Band, with some 40 members, is the most senior level of the band and the standard is generally from grade 5 and above,” he said. “The current age’s of the band range from 10 to 18. Many of the Youth Band players have gone on to play with championship and first section bands including; Fodens Band, Black Dyke Mills Band, Roberts Bakery Band, Grimethorpe Colliery Band and Tredegar Town Band.

“The bands are supported by the local Lions clubs of South Cheshire and North Staffordshire and are one of only two organisations of its kind in the world to operate in the name of Lions Youth.”

Lions Youth Brass Band works hard to maintain strong links within the local community and has a good relationship with local Schools, they are also a partner of The Love Music Trust. The Bands Musical Director is Nigel Birch and he has directed the band from 1990 and has led the band to all its major successes, including multiple 2nd and 3rd placements in the National Youth Brass Band Championships in recent years. The band has also made a number of recordings over the years.

A band spokesman says they are determined to further the brass band tradition, giving youngsters the opportunity to create music and foster teamwork and friendships in a way that attracts and inspires today’s youth.
